Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation services helps people recuperate and improve or regain skills and abilities after an illness, injury, or treatment. It addresses physical, mental and cognitive aspects of recovery. The goal is to restore independence or achieve as much normalcy as possible in daily activities and functions.
To reach this goal, patients of all ages work with a multidisciplinary team of health care providers. This may include physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, vocational counselors, mental health providers, and social workers.
Specialty rehabilitation services may include:
- Cancer Rehabilitation, including breast cancer rehabilitation
- Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation
- Neurorehabilitation, including brain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation
- Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Rehabilitation
- Pediatric Rehabilitation to address the unique needs of children
Conditions Treated
Your doctor may recommend rehabilitation services for the following:
- Chronic conditions that affect your ability to care for yourself
- Chronic pain or weakness
- Cognitive problems, including memory loss, confusion, and difficulty concentrating
- Disability due to an illness, injury or treatment
- Limited function or ongoing pain after an accident or injury
- Movement problems, including spasticity or stiffness
- Nervous system damage due to diabetic neuropathy, stroke, brain or spinal cord injury, or other neurologic condition
- Obesity or difficulty moving and being active
- Surgery recovery
Services Provided
Specific rehabilitation services include:
- Activities of daily living training, including bathing, dressing, cooking, eating and driving
- Assistive device training to use communication devices, orthotics, prostheses, limb or body braces, and canes, walkers and wheelchairs
- Body mechanics training to improve range of motion, mobility, strength, and motor skills
- Environment modifications to improve safety and accessibility at home
- Lymphedema therapy to manage the accumulation of lymphatic fluid after cancer treatment
- Neuromuscular retraining to improve nerve function and hand-eye coordination
- Return-to-work programs, including career counseling and help obtaining accommodations and accessibility in the workplace
- Sensory integration and vestibular training to improve touch, balance, and spatial awareness
- Speech-language training to improve swallowing, speech, communication, thinking, memory, understanding, reading and writing
Your rehabilitation team will tailor a program to meet your individual needs. Periodic reevaluation will allow your team to adjust the program as your needs change.
